Recently, I've gathered renewed interest in some of Vivaldi's violin concertos. I have been listening to them for many years, since middle school. Easy listening for sure, and maybe exactly because of this (as with all other Vivaldi music), my interest in them has been on and off over the years. Now I'm on it again.
I had been away from Urbana much of the time since July. As such, I hadn't got much desire to touch my violin - I felt like I was always in a hurry to somewhere. It's towards the end of October, when I returned from Hong Kong, that I felt I finally started to live in the new apartment, where I had moved in with my 2 roommates since August. Now, I've finally got some mood to get back on violin again. I have found that these Vivaldi concertos are particularly well suited for me to get in shape. They are more interesting than the regular etudes. They do require some practice to play well, but not particularly challenging - I don't think I'm quite ready to play anything hard yet.
These violin pieces are lovely. I can't resist sharing some of them here =)
In my mind, this is a piece that has been associated with what court music is. It is elegant, expressive, and refreshing.
I first listened to this piece from a senior student of my violin teacher, when he was practising it for his grade 8 violin exam. This movement, together with the final movement (next one), was dedicated to a favorite student of Vivaldi who was about to leave Vivaldi. It is easy to feel a tinge of departing sadness, and how it transforms throughout the movement, as well as across movements.
In my imagination, this highly charismatic piece represents the self-declaration of a lady, with very refined tastes, reserved, and yet emotional.
